Our pets will do some weird stuff in their own time or even in front of you. Some of those things are bred into them and are from the old days when they ran in pack before being domesticated. Nonetheless, a lot of the weird behavior can be explained. One of ThriftyPetSupply’s dogs loves to roll in the grass or on the cement. This of course is after she has gotten a bath and mom is trying to keep her clean. Fat chance, says Maggie because when mom is not looking she is going to roll and play. ThriftyPetSupply found some great information on why our pets do the funny things they do and wanted to share with our family.
Some of the reason we love our dogs is that their unconditional love and curious nature is fantastic. Some of their best qualities might also confuse us from time to time: the digging, the rolling in stinky, smelly stuff, and their nesting rituals at bedtime.
Many of these weird behaviors are common to dogs and are believed to be tied to the days when they ran in packs, dug shallow dwellings and gathered their own food.
Before dogs were domesticated about 100 years back, they dug shallow beds to keep them a little warmer than if they just slept on the ground’s surface.
The bedtime ritual might also be linked to a dog’s instinct to mark their territory. Dogs mark the area that they consider theirs by scratching the ground with the smell that comes from the sweat glands in their paws.
Many of these weird behaviors that are common to dogs are believed to be tied to the days when they ran in packs.
Dogs Love to Dig!!

Dogs dig for lots of reasons: As a means to get somewhere, hide food, explore and, or sometimes just for fun.
The ability to get dirt between the paws goes back to the days when they dug dens and buried their leftovers. Watching other dogs dig can also encourage a dogs’ urge to make a hole of their own.

Many dogs enjoy rolling in smelly stuff from piles of autumn leaves to dirt, snow and, unfortunately, even the droppings and carcasses of other creatures.
Dogs might prefer a good roll to itch a scratch. Dogs who sometimes rub around after a bath might be attempting to remove the smell of the shampoo off.
This Feels So Right
Reeling in something stinky could be a dog’s way of saying that he found something interesting and he wants you to know. Or he could be just marking his territory. He may enjoy the smell of something so much that chafing against it is his way of taking that lovely smell along with him.
